Work, Week of April 23, 2012

Considerable progress this week! Painting of the new stalls was completed and the doors installed. Sinks went in. And the 25-cent public toilet made its debut, causing some perplexed patrons!

The construction wall for the center stalls was moved back, revealing the new open space for seating and pushcarts

Some further improvements -- week of April 9th

The new stalls on the Varet Street side have been plumbed, electrified, and painted, and the counters were installed. Bathroom renovations continue. The central space will lose its construction fencing soon to reveal the new look. Still on schedule. Roof repairs start in a few weeks.

ISCP Art Exhibition at Moore Street -- April 23rd through June 7th

Lotte van den Audenaeroen: Potentialis
April 13 through June 7th
Moore St. Market, 110 Moore St., Brooklyn, NY 11206 (L train to Montrose, J/M to Flushing)

EVENT: Monday, April 23, 5:30pm Artist Walkthrough I 6-7pm Roundtable Discussion

Roundtable participants: Lotte Van den Audenaeren, artist; Joan Bartolomeo, President, Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation; Kari Conte, ISCP Director of Programs and Exhibitions; and Juliana Cope, ISCP Special Projects Coordinator.

In Potentialis, Lotte Van den Audenaeren's most recent site-specific urban intervention, text becomes a timekeeper, eroding over a period of months or changing with light and the movement of passersby. At Moore St. Market, her text-based installations in vinyl adhesive film offer a series of apparitions simultaneously present and absent. As light and movement vary throughout each day, so do each of the works, at times blending into the existing market activities.

Van den Audenaeren’s installation is the second Participatory Project in a series of works by ISCP residents at Moore St. Market, one of New York City’s few remaining indoor food markets. In December 2011, ISCP resident Minja Gu opened Atlantic Pacific co., a fully operational yet fictional rare goods import/export business. Graduate art students participating in the ISCP Studio Assistant Program assisted in the production of both Atlantic Pacific co. and Potentialis.

Generous support has been provided by NYC Council Member Diana Reyna’s office, District 34, the Brooklyn Economic Development Corporation, Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Milton and Sally Avery Foundation

Moore Street at the Local Food & Travel Expo, April 14th

Moore Street Market was front and center at the 2nd Annual Escapemaker Local Food & Travel Expo last Saturday. Held at the the historic Williamsburg Savings Bank Building near Atlantic Avenue, the Expo was heavily attended by folks looking for local travel options and interesting "Made in Brooklyn" food and products. We brought pasteles, alcapurrias, sofritto, sorullos, empenadas, rellanas de papa, as well as a sampling of other vendors' wares.

We ran out of food and fliers by 2 pm! So a successful day overall. And thanks to Chef/Owner Jacques Gautier of the Restaurant Palo Santo at 652 Union Street, who not only demonstrated how to make corn masa from scratch, but who also heavily promoted the Market. Thanks Chef Gautier -- I look forward to visiting your restaurant!!

We also welcomed Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez to the booth for a visit. She advised me to tell people that pasteles were better steamed, than boiled!

I'm not the best photographer, so these pictures really don't do it justice.

Several views of our display. The Baby Jesus caused a couple of curious looks, but attracted people to the booth to inquire why it was there! The answer: Vendor Las Gemelas is widely known for dressing the infant for the devotional feast of Cadaleria, a Mexican feast day.

New Art Installation at Moore Street

The Market is once again pleased to be working with the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) to feature the work of a sponsored artist at the Market. After a successful showing of Korean artist Minja Gu's work "Atlantic Pacific" in December, we welcome Belgium artist Lotte Van den Audenaeren, who will be exhibiting her work here through Mid-May.

Lotte's work features the path of light that washes across the Market each day, with stencils on the building's skylights casting their shadows in ever changing patterns as the day moves from dawn to dusk.

The official opening is April 23rd, but you can see Lotte's work right now as it is being installed, and as the gorgeous Spring weather cooperates!

The Shared Kitchen Begins to Take Shape

The shared kitchen came a little closer to reality last week when we had some new equipment delivered. Today, we met with kitchen designer and Kingsborough Community College culinary professor James Fuestal to begin laying out the plans for the kitchen -- he should have conceptual, preliminary drawings next week!

Also met with Planner/Designer Darryl Cook of Cook Keating, who will be working with our architect, Lia Dikigoroupoulos, also a CUNY Professor at NYC College of Technology -- to begin planning for exterior and interior renovations.
